Given : You fly to a place X in a Boeing at a speed of 500 miles/hour and come back from X, following the same route, at a speed of 160 miles/ hour.

To Find : What is the average speed for to-and-fro journey

Solution:

Let say Distance  =   one side  800D  Miles

Total Distance to and fro = 800D + 800D = 1600D  Miles

Speed one side = 500 miles /hr

Time taken = 800D/500  = 1.6D hr

Speed in return side =160 miles /hr

Time taken = 800D/160  = 5D  hr

Total Time taken = 1.6D + 5D = 6.6D hrs

Average Speed = 1600D/6.6D

= 242.42   miles/hr

Average speed for to-and-fro journey  242.42   miles/hr
