Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

1. Fill the 5-gallon jug, then pour it into the 3-gallon jug until it is full (leaving 2 gallons in the 5-gallon jug).

=> 8 gallon jug has 3 gallons; 3 gallon jug has 3 gallons and 5 gallon jug has 2 gallons.

2.  Pour the 3-gallon jug back into the 8 gallon jug completely and  pour the 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug.

==> At this point 8 gallon jug has 6 gallons, 3 gallon jug has 2 gallons and 5 gallon jug is empty.

3. Now fill the 5-gallon jug from 8 gallon jug and pour it into the remaining space of the 3-gallon jug (1 gallon), leaving you with 4 gallons in the 5-gallon jug.
