You have been given three test tubes A, B, C containing zinc sulphate, copper sulphate and

iron sulphate respectively, and you have performed an experiment as indicated below:

In A: Cu-turnings added to zinc sulphate solution.

In B: Iron filings added to copper sulphate solution.

In C: Zinc granules added to iron sulphate solution.

All the test tubes kept for some time. Write your observations for each test tube. Write the

balanced chemical equations for the reactions taking place (if there be any).

Answer:

In test tube A:- copper cannot displace zinc from a compound. Hence, no reaction takes place when copper turnings are kept in zinc sulphate solution.

In test tube B:- When we put iron nail in it , copper forms brown coloured coating on iron nail. The solution's colour also changes to light green colour. Hence, it is a displacement reaction as iron is more reactive than copper and copper is displaced to form ferrous sulphate solution.

Chemical equation

Fe + CuSO4 --> FeSO4 + Cu

In test tube C:- When zinc is added to the solution of iron sulphate, the colour of iron sulphate solution changes. It is because zinc is more reactive than iron, therefore, it displaces iron from its solution of iron sulphate and a grey precipitate of iron and a colourless solution of zinc sulphate is formed.

Chemical equation

Zn + FeSO4 → ZnSO4 + Fe
