: You have been given with a spherical mirror which is used in solar furnace. Ramesh allows a ray of light along the principal axis to fall on this mirror. Suresh placed an object at a distance of 10 cm in front of mirror and formed image 3 times enlarge that of an object Sanya while doing experiment found that the mirror produced magnification of +4. i) Identify the type of mirror and define principle focus. ii) Can it form virtual and magnified image why/why not? 21

Answer:

(i) The type of mirror used here is a concave mirror.

Principle focus: Light rays parallel to the principle axis meet at a point in it. This point is called the 'principle focus' and is denoted by f.

(ii) Yes, under certain condition the mirror can form a virtual and magnified image. That is when the object is in between P and F, it produces a virtual and magnified image.

More: You might've been confused that the mirror should be convex here. But convex mirror is a diverging mirror (in case when it is in air). It cannot make the rays intersect at a point.
