Explanation:
Dear Ms Natasha,
I am writing this letter to explain why I will be unable to return the three books that I borrowed from the school library on a week-loan.
After taking the books out on 9th May, I planned to return them before 16th May. Earlier today, I had an urgent call from my cousin that my aunt had had fall and had been taken to a hospital for emergency medical care. I am very close to her and had spent several years at her house, so, I feel I will have to go and see her, which I will do tonight. I plan to stay there for about a week and look after her.
However, I am due to return the books by the day after tomorrow, which I cannot do. Considering the situation, I trust you will kindly waive any fines that may incur from the delay.
Yours faithfully,
Tom Behan

Subject: Apology for losing a borrowed book
Dear Sir,
I am very sorry to inform you that the book I borrowed last summer vacation is lost. I have searched everywhere at home and also checked with my friends in class about the book but just can't find it.
Please let me know the fine that I will have to pay for the book. I am willing to pay the cost of buying a new copy of "The Soldier and the Vampire and other stories."
I assure you that this will not repeat again and I will take care of the books I borrow from the library.
Yours sincerely,
