“You’ll excuse me for speaking, miss, but, I see you’re acquainted with the marshal here. If you’ll ask him to speak a word for me when we get to the pen he’ll do it, and it’ll make things easier for me there. He’s taking me to Leavenworth Prison. It’s seven years for counterfeiting.” i. To whom were these words addressed? What made the speaker say “You’ll excuse me for speaking miss”? Where were they at the moment? ii. How was the appearance of the speaker different from that of Mr. Easton?

Answer:

(i) These words were addressed to Miss Fairchild. When Miss Fairchild thought that her old friend Mr. Easton was going to prison, the marshal thought that she might have a bad impression on her friend meeting him after such a long time. They were sitting in the train at that moment.

(ii) Mr. Easton was a very young man, he was fit like how marshals are supposed to be. The speaker ( the marshal ) is an old man.

Hope this helps.
