Good teachers can deliver students to rivers of knowledge and understanding, but students must be willing to drink the water; this willingness depends on many factors that are often outside the control of teachers. To blame teachers for student failure is akin to blaming American troops because democracy is not flourishing in Iraq. Perhaps a first step is to expect as much out of students as we expect from their teachers. Unfortunately, many in American society value teachers more as scapegoats for society's ills than as one vehicle for the education of children. Will we choose to continue to blame teachers or choose to help students succeed?
