I would ask him if he is having problem to see close objects (hypermetropia) or far away objects (myopia).

Again if he doesn't know it , and have already consulted a doctor, I will ask him if he is having a +ve power lens (which indicated he is wearing convex lense hence he has hypermetropia) or is using a -ve powered lens (which indicates that he is using a concave lens and has myopia)

Next if he says he is unable to see objects both far and close clearly , he has either a cataract in his eye or is having presbyopia.
