1. Give reasons for the following
observation:
The smell of hot sizzling food
reaches you several metres
away, but to get the smell from
cold food you have to go close.
2. A diver is able to cut through
water in a swimming pool. Which
property of matter does this
observation show?
3. What are the characteristics of
the particles of matter?

Answer:

1. This happens because rate of diffusion of gas increases with increase in temperature. In case of hot food diffusion of smell is faster whereas in case of cold food, diffusion is slower.

2.A diver is able to cut through water in a swimming pool because being a liquid it has weak inter mlecules force of attraction between the molecules.

3. The particles of the matter have space between them.

1. the smell of hot sizzling food reaches us from several meters away but we have to go close to smell cold food because we know that kinetic energy increases when the temperature rises and the particles start moving quickly so the particles of hot food get mixes with the particles of air quickly and we are able to smell from several meters away.

2. a diver is able to cut through water in a swimming pool because it has space. the force of attraction between the particles of water (liquid) is weak. hence, there's space between them. that's why diver is able to cut through the water in the swimming pool. the property which shows this observation is that particles of matters have space between them.

3. characteristics of particles of matter are :-

  • the particles of matter are very very small and can't be seen through naked eyes.

  • the particles of matter have space between them.

  • particles of matter each other with a force called force of attraction.
