Preserving our Traditions and Customs even today :

We respect and preserve traditions through cultural celebrations. Through the naming of our children. Through the honoring of our ancestors through the preservation of their graves and monuments. By the teaching of our youth as to the great people and institutions of the past.

In these days there is a worldview that does not value the past, and which has no sense of objective reality or truth. It presents a great challenge. We see this problem at the moment as progressives and radicals are bent on tearing down any symbol of the past which might offend them.

The study of history is paramount if we are to identify and maintain traditions. It reflects respect for the wisdom of the past and of our elders. We do not deny that they were humans and were not without their own sins and errors. But we elevate the right and the good that they did.

For me, music and art are great ways to preserve tradition, be in it in architecture, the preservation of older musical styles and instruments, or the use of the styles of performing art that we treasure from the past. Museums are treasures, as well.

Sadly, modern and post-modern thought have cast a negative glance at the past and lost the values of the transcendent—goodness, virtue, and beauty. Our modern cities are ugly, frankly, and diminish those values for the purpose of utility over form. Who isn’t naturally comforted and attracted to the older cities that were built around a squares and open shops/restaurants that were blended into the very place that people live? Instead, we have turned to concrete and asphalt, devoid of beauty and appeal. Rank consumerism has dictated the form.

As an individuals, we can reject this lack of the transcendent, at least in our own lives. We can emphasize beauty and virtue in our own environment, dress, and activities. We can emulate them in our language and courtesies.
