India, like the rest of the world, is facing the possibility that several of its wildlife
species will soon become extinct. The Ganges dolphin, the Asiatic lion, the one-horned
rhinoceros, the Bengal tiger, the snow leopard, the lion-tailed macaque, the Kashmir red
stag, the Nilgiri tahr, the gharial and many more majestic animals are facing extinction.
What causes extinction? In one word, humans. Human beings cause loss of
habitat for these wild animals when they cut down trees for fuel, food, or construction
purposes. Humans also hunt wild animals indiscriminately and even when laws are laid
down against the hunting of certain species, poaching becomes a common practice. As
a result, in order to protect the animals they have endangered, humans place them in
sanctuaries and reserves. Here, too, although many animals are indeed protected, over-
grazing and overcrowding become very real threats. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972
has also ensured that endangered and rare species are kept safe from trading and other
commercial activities.
What can we do? Creating awareness among future generations is a must if we
want to preserve these beautiful animals. Schools and universities must continue to
enlighten students on the necessity of preserving all endangered species so that the
delicate balance of nature can be preserved.
