1) The process of digestion helps the body to absorb the nutrients and other important components of food, so that our body can work or function properly.
2) The major steps of digestion are:-
⇒Chewing
Digestion begins as soon as we put the food in our mouth. Our teeth and saliva, from the salivary glands under our tongue, break down the food as we chew.
⇒Swallowing
When we swallow, food enters our oesophagus, which is connected to our stomach. Once the food is in our oesophagus, waves of involuntary muscular contractions, called peristalsis, move the food toward our stomach.
⇒Stomach Digestion
Food enters our stomach through a muscular ring, or sphincter, that closes to keep the food in our stomach and stomach acid out of our oesophagus. As we continue eating, our food's mixed with gastric acid and other digestive juices in our stomach. Then the stomach empties this mixture into the small intestine
⇒.Small Intestine Digestion
our food is digested more thoroughly in our small intestine, also known as the duodenum. The small intestine, as well as the liver and pancreas, produce digestive juices and enzymes that separate out the nutrients in food. Among those enzymes are lipase and amylase from the pancreas. Muscular contractions keep the food moving along toward the large intestine.
⇒AbsorptionThe digested food continues its journey into the large intestine. The nutrients - fats, carbohydrates and proteins, for example -- have been broken down and are ready to be absorbed through the intestinal walls into our bloodstream for transport throughout our body.
⇒Waste Elimination
Waste products from digestion are not absorbed through the intestinal walls but continue moving through our digestive tract into the colon. Waste products include dietary fiber. Waste products leave your body via bowel movements.
