Raigad is a hill fort situated in the Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. The Raigad Fort was seized by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and made it his capital in 1674 when he was crowned as the King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire, eventually covering much of western and central India.[1]

Raigad Fort.
- Raigad is referred to as a hill fort situated in Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It is one of the strongest fortresses on the Deccan Plateau.
- The structure of the Raigad fort was built by Shivaji and Chief Engineer Hirojee Indulkar.
- In the year 1674 Sivaji made Raigad fort his capital.
- The main palace of the fort is built with wood.
- Currently, there remain only the destroyed remains of the fort which constitute the pillars. The main fort ruins constitute the queen's quarters, with each chamber having its own private restroom, and six chambers.
- Apart from these remains there used to be three watch towers on the front ground which got destroyed due to bombardment.
- The only main pathway to the fort passes through the "Maha Darwaja".
- The Maha Darwaja consists of two huge bastions which stand on both sides of the door and are approximately 65–70 feet in height.
- The top of the fort is 600 ft above this door.
- The king's court, inside the Raigad Fort, has a replica of the original throne that faces the main doorway called the Nagarkhana Darwaja.
