Answer:

osmosis is a process in which the water molecules move from a region oh higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration across a semi permiable membrane.

THE POTATO EXPERIMENT:

it is the best examples for the process of osmosis

take four peeled POTATO halves (A,B,C,D)and scoop each one out to make POTATO cups. one of these POTATO cups should be made from a boiled POTATO. put each POTATO cup in a trough containing water. Now,

a)keep cup A empty.

b)put one teaspoon sugar in cup B.

c)put one teaspoon salt in cup C.

d)put one teaspoon sugar in the boiled POTATO cup D.

RESULT:

keep the for 2 hrs. then observe the four POTATO cups.

a)water enters in the hollowed portions of POTATO B and C as a result of osmosis. since the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, the water moves inside by osmosis.hence it gathers inside the POTATO cup.

b)POTATO A in the experiment is empty. hence no water gathers in its portion.

c)water is not able to enter potato D because POTATO used here is boiled. for osmosis to take place the semipermeable membrane is required which is structured or damaged in the POTATO cup D. therefore the water does not enter the boiled POTATO cup D.

HOPE IT IS HELPFUL !!!
