In other words, environment places limitations on humans, but humans are able to alter their environment. If the researcher looks at the environment and how it affects society, that provides a basis for determinism; possibilism addresses how people use resources to create their own environment and mitigate its effects.

Determinism is considered passive and Possibilism is active force in context of man  and environment interaction.

Explanation:

  • The major difference is that determines focus more on the environmental aspects and the possibilism focus more on the human aspects. The physical environment is expressed as relief, topography, and climate.
  • The man and environmental interaction are seen as human thoughts, actions, and behaviors.
  • The idea that determines states that humans are bound by the environment and are dependent on if tor their existence.
  • While the possibilism on the other hand states that they have adapted to live and learned to survive.
  • Man has mastered and altered the physical environment to meet his needs and was stated by Vidal de Lablache.
