2. Mr. McMulkin has a disease. He started with 50 spots on his body. After 1 day there were 90 spots. After 2 days there were 130 spots. a. Assume that this pattern continues. Make a table showing the number of spots for days 0-7.

b. What type of relationship does the table suggest? Explain why.

c. Write an equation for in terms of , where represents the number of spots and represents the number of days.

d. Explain what each part of the equation tells us about how the number of spots change.

e. Predict how many spots Mr. McMulkin will have after 20 days. Does this answer make sense? Why or why not?

Answer:

Given Information —

  • 50 spots appear in 1 day.
  • In the second day, the spots increased to 90.
  • Third day, it increased to 130.

Answer a. Refer the attachment.

Answer b. The relationship between variable x and variable y as number of days and number of spots respectively, is Direct proportionality. This is because as the variable x increases by the spots also increased by 40.

Answer c. The equation between variable x and y is : y = 40x + 10.

Answer d. The y is the dependent variable and access the independent variable. So, y = 40x + 10.

x is the number of years. If x increases automatically the variable y that is the number of spots will increase.

Answer e.

y = 40x + 10

y = 40*20 + 10

y = 800 + 10

y = 810 spots

Yes it makes sense but it is also possible the rate of increment increases or decreases, changing the number of spots.
