Metals react with water and produce a metal oxide and hydrogen gas. Metal oxides that are soluble in water dissolve in it to further form metal hydroxide. But all metals do not react with water. Metals like potassium and sodium react violently with cold water.

When a metal react with water,then a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas is formed. The intensity of reaction of a metal with water depends on its chemical reactivity. Some metals react vigorously even with cold water,some react with hot water,some metals react with steam whereas some metals do not react even with steam.
