Cell theory: Two German biologists Matthias
Jakob Schleiden (in 1838) and Theodor Schwann
(in 1839) proposed the cell theory of life. It was
further refined by Robert Virchow in 1855. This
theory states the following:
All living organisms (animals and plants) are
made up of cells.
Cells are the basic structural and functional
units of all living organisms.
New cells arise from pre-existing cells by cell
division. No cell can originate spontaneously.
Every organism starts its life as a single cell.

Answer:

The unified cell theory states that: all living things are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the basic unit of life; and new cells arise from existing cells. Rudolf Virchow later made important contributions to this theory. ... The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things.
