Rate=− Δ[H 2]/Δt =− Δ[I 2]/Δt =+1/2 Δ[HI]/Δt

Expression for average rate: -Δ1/2[HI] /Δt; where t is the time taken.

What is the rate of reaction?

  • The ratio of the concentration of the reactant to the total time taken.
  • Rate = [change in concentration] / total time taken.
  • Rate = -[change in concentration of reactants]/ time taken.

                =  [change in concentration of products]/ time taken.

Therefore, for the reaction,

  • 2HI(g) → H2(g) + I2(g)
  • Rate in term of reactants= -Δ1/2[HI] /Δt;
