Answer:

There is no “simplification”. There is evaluation which, as many of us have stated is a matter of following the orders of operation. This case only involves exponentiation, multiplication and subtraction hence:

3^3 (3 cubed) = 3 x 3 x 3 or 27 (exponentiation)

2^2 (2 squared = 2 x 2 or 4 (exponentiation)

-4 x 5 = - 20 (Multiplication)

therefore you have 27 - 20 = 7 (Subtraction)

Now if it was written 3^3 - (2^2 x 5) the answer would still be 27 - (4 x 5) = 7

But, if it was written (3^3 - 2^2) x 5 it would become (27 - 4) x 5 or 23 x 5 or 115!
