3. A motorboat goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 5 hours and
returns back in 7 hours. If the water is flowing at 2 km/h, find the speed of the boat in
still water.

Hi mate here is the answer:--
Let the motorboat speed will be x
Downstream speed = (x + 1)
Distance between the points = 5(x+2)⋯(i)
Upstream speed = (x-1)
Distance between the points = 7(x-2)⋯(ii)
on solving (i) and (ii)
5(x + 2) = 7(x-2)
5x + 5 = 7x-14
5x-7x = -14-5
-2x = -19
x = 9.5
∴The speed will be 9.5 km/hr
