32. Observe the following figure. AB is light ray travelling from liquid to
air. BC and BD are refracted rays.
i) Which is the refracted ray if the liquid taken is benzene?
ii) Which is the refracted ray if the liquid taken is water?
Justify your answer. (The absolute refractive index of water and benzene
are 1.33 and 1.5 respectively)

Answer:

here D ray is benzene and C is water

Explanation:

we know that benzene is more denser than water..

when ray travels from rarer to denser medium it bends towards the normal.

in this case benzene ray bends more , towards the normal being more denser.

hence it moves less away from normal when it moves from denser to rearer.

(i) BD is the refracted ray if the liquid taken is benzene

(ii) BC is the refracted ray if the liquid taken is water

Explanation:

Given that the refractive index of water and benzene are 1.33 and 1.5 respectively

Therefore, it is clear that water is a rarer medium than benzene

We know that

When a ray of light travels from rarer to denser medium it deflects towards the normal, the denser the medium, the greater is the deflection towards the normal

from the given attached figure it is clear that the ray BD is deflected more towards the normal than that of ray BC

Therefore, BD is the refracted ray if the liquid taken is benzene

And, BC is the refracted ray if the liquid is taken as water

Hope this answer is helpful.
