Whta is mercury cell?

It is a device which is used in hearing aids, watches, etc. and it is consists of zinc - mercury, amalgam is present on anode & also a paste of carbon & Hgo is present on the cathode side.

Reaction:-

Zn(Hg) + HgO(s) ---------> ZnO(s) + Hg(I)

Some important points about mercury cell are as follows:-

1. It uses very low current.

2. Paste of KOH & ZnO is used as electrolyte.

3. Approximate potential of the cell is about 1.35V.

4. Overall reaction will be constant.

5. There is no work of any ion in the reaction.
