The % that are children is 1-(0.40+0.39) = 0.21
So the ratio of men to children is 40/21
Set x = the number of men

cross products gives us
21x = 40*12600
21x = 504000
divide each side by 21
x = 24000

let the total population be 100
given 40% are men and 39% are women so children will be 100-(40+39)=21
let x be the total no of men
by ratio proportion we have
21/40=12600/x
so x=12600x40/21=24000 men
