Weight of carbon in 8.8 g of carbon dioxide = 8.8/44 + 12 = 2.4 ----------- (1)

Weight of H in 5.4g of water = 5.4/18 * 2 = 0.6 ------------------ (2)

From (1) and (2), we get

2.4 + 0.6 = 3.0g

The data illustrate the law of conservation of mass.
