Answer:

Let C = # Children who joined the football league LAST year

Let T = # Children who joined the football league THIS year

We know T = C + 40

AND

T = 1.10C

We can use substitution to solve

1.10C = C + 40

0.1C = 40

C = 400

Answer:

Let 'x' the number of kins in the league last year.

The the number of kids this year is 'x + 40' (40 more).

x + 40 = 1.10*x (the number of kids this year is 110% of the number of kids last year

x = 400 children

400 children played in the league last year.
