In the absence of atmosphere, the astronauts see the actual colour of sky ie, black.

As there is an atmosphere on Earth, which scatters the white sunlight into it's 7 component colours. As blue light scatters the most, we are able to see the sky appearing as blue.

As there is no atmosphere in space, no light is going to refract or disperse. Thus, no scattering of light takes place which gives the space a black colour.
