The body of filarial worm is covered with spines.

Filariasis:

Filariasis is a disease caused in humans by the parasite Wuchereria bancrofti (filarial worm) and is commonly transmitted through blood-sucking vectors like mosquitos.

Filarial Worm:

  • The filarial worm or Wuchereria bancrofti belongs to the family Onchocercidae. They have biologically evolved into unique species when comparing to their other parasitic ancestors.
  • The parasites are cylindrical in shape and the spines in their body helps to attach themselves to the host tissues. The life cycle of the filarial worm mainly happens in the human lymphatic system.
  • The eggs or young larvae are produced by the female parasite and is released into the lymph. From the lymph vessels the young larvae enters into the blood vessels and settle in the peripheral cutaneous blood vessels.
  • From the peripheral blood vessels they enter into the mouth of mosquito when bitten and the larvae enters the infective stage.
