= 7.84 J

is transferred to the spring in its instant of max. compression. 

Energy stored in a spring

= ½.k.x²

= 7.84 J. 

Therefore

extension x = √[7.84×2/k]

= √[15.68/2000]

= 0.0885 m

= 8.85 cm.
