Given: a and b are two points , 78 m apart in a straight line stretch of a bank of a river.

c is an object on the opposite banks such that ∠cab=58° and ∠cba=45°

To find : calculate the distance of c from the bank ab

Solution:

cm ⊥ ab

cm = d  = distance of c from the bank ab

∠cam = ∠cab = 58°

Tan ∠cam =  cm/am

=> Tan 58°  = d/am

=> am = d/Tan 58°

=> am = d/1.6

∠cbm = ∠cba = 45°

Tan ∠cbm =  cm/bm

=> Tan 45°  = d/bm

=> bm = d/Tan 45°

=> bm = d

am  + bm  = 78

=> d/1.6  + d  = 78

=> d(2.6)  = 78 * 1.6

=> d = 48

distance of c from the bank ab = 48 m
