Taking east as positive and west as negative.

from initial position, baby goes 12 feet east- (+12) feet

then towards the end the baby goes 9 feet west- (-9) feet

⇒Resultant displacement along x-axis- (12-9) = (+3) feet

The baby also travels 4 feet south and no movement north.

This forms a right angled triangle with base- 3 feet, perpendicular- 4 feet. And you want to find the hypotenuse.

H² = B² + P².

⇒H = √B²+ P²

⇒H = √3² + 4²

⇒H = √9 + 16

⇒H = √25

⇒H = +5 or -5

(But distance cannot be negative)

Therefore, the baby is 5 feet away from initial position.
