keep one apple in the basket. Give the apple with the basket to one kid.
So both basket and kid have one apple.

Distribute the other 4 apples to the other four kids, one each.

Answer:

The basket has 5 apples to be divided to 5 kids in such a way that every kid must have an apple and also one apple stays in the basket. At first it may seem strange. But, we can think of the problem as follows:

Give 1 apple each to each of the 4 kids, now 4 kids have an apple each and we are left with an apple in the basket.

If we now give the basket containing the 1 left apple to the 5th kid, all conditions are satisfied.

Thus, we give 4 apples to 4 kids and the apple in the basket along with the basket itself to the 5th kid.
