A block of mass m initaially at rest is dropped from a height h onto a spring whose force constant is k. Fjnd the mximum distance x through which the spring will be compressed?

mgh=1/2kx^2
(According to conservation of energy, the potential energy block at h height will totally convert to potential energy of spring at maximum compression)

x^2=2mgh/k
x=√2mgh/√k

Therefore maximum compression=√2mgh/√k
