a boat covers a certain distance downstream in one and a half hours. it covers the same distance upstream in 2 hours. the speed of the boat in still water is 35km/hr.find the speed of stream!

let the speed of stream be X
so distance covered by the boat in downstream = ( speed of boat + speed of stream ) * time = (35 + X ) * 1.5
now , distance covered by the boat in upstream = ( speed of boat - speed of stream ) * time = ( 35 - X ) * 2
since distance is same in both conditions . therefore, (35 + X ) * 1.5 = ( 35 - X ) * 2
52.5 + 1.5x = 70 - 2x
3.5x = 70 - 52.5
x = 17.5 / 3.5
x = 5
hence the speed of stream = 5 km / hr
