Explanation:

Vc = velocity of stream

Vb = velocity of boat

in downstream,

V= D/T

D = V x T

32 = ( Vc + Vb ) x 2----------1

in upstream,

32 = ( Vc - Vb) x 16 -----------2

( Vc - Vb) x 16 = ( Vc + Vb) x 2

14Vc = 18Vb

Vc /Vb = 9/7

equation 1

32 = Vb ( 9/7 +1) x 2

32 = Vb ( 16/7) x 2

31 = Vb (32/7)

Vb = 7 miles / hour

Vc = 9 miles / hour
