Answer:

s=distance/time

let stream speed be x and that of boat be y

upstream x-y=8.5

downstream. x+y=15.5

after eliminating y

2x=24. (y gets eliminated and x+x is 2x and 8.5+15.5 is 24)

so x or stream speed is 12 km/hr

Speed and boat problem

Given:

Speed of boat in upstream is 8.5 km/hr

Speed of boat in downstream is 15.5 km/hr

To find:

Speed of stream

Explanation:

Let the speed of boat in still water be x km/hr.

and the speed of  stream be y km/hr.

According to question,

x+y=15.5 \ km/hr\\x-y=8.5 \ km/hr

On solving both equation, we get

x=12 \ km/hr\\and\\y=3.5 \ km/hr

So, speed of stream is 3.5km/hr.
