upstream:
50/10 = 5km/hr

downstream:
60/4 = 15km/hr

Answer:

The speed of the stream is 5 km/hr.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : A boat travels 50 km in 10 hours in upstream where 60 km in 4 hours in downstream.

To find : The speed of the stream?

Solution :

Relation of distance , time and speed is

\text{Speed}=\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

Let x be the speed in still water and y be the speed in the stream.

A boat travels 50 km in 10 hours in upstream.

Distance = 50 km

Time = 10 hours

Speed = x-y

x-y=\frac{50}{10}

x-y=5 .....(1)

A boat travels 60 km in 4 hours in downstream.

Distance = 60 km

Time = 4 hours

Speed = x+y

x-y=\frac{60}{4}

x+y=15 .....(2)

Solving equation (1) and (2) by adding them,

x-y+x+y=5+15

2x=20

x=10

Substitute in equation (1),

10-y=5

y=5

Therefore, The speed of the stream is 5 km/hr.
