let speed of the boat be x

let the speed of the stream be y

speed=distance/time

along the stream:

1/x+y=5/60

against the stream:

6/x-y=1

therefore x=9km/hr and y=3km/hr

Given that,

A boatman rows 1 km in 5 minutes along the stream and 6 km in 1 hour against the stream.

To find,

The speed of the stream.

Solution,

Let us consider that the speed of boat is x km/h and speed of stream is y km/h.

For 1 km in 5 minutes along the stream :

\dfrac{1}{x+y}=\dfrac{5}{60}\ ..........(1)

For 6 km in 1 hour against the stream :

\dfrac{6}{x-y}=1\ ..........(2)

To find the speed of stream we need to solve equation (1) and (2) as :

x = 9 km/h and y = 3 km/h

Hence, the speed of the stream is 3 km/h.
