Solution:
Let the number copies of books
purchased by book seller = x
Total cost price ( c.p ) = Rs 4800--(1)
(given)
c.p of 1 book = Rs(4800/x)
selling price of each book = Rs 100
Total s.p = Rs( 100x )----(2)
profit = cp of 15 books
= 15 × ( 4800 )/x ---( 3 )
We know that ,
s.p - c.p = profit
=> 100x - 4800 = 15 × ( 4800/x )
=> 100x² - 4800x - 15 × 4800 = 0
Divide each term with 100, we get
=> x² - 48x - 720 = 0
=> x² - 60x + 12x - 720 = 0
=> x(x-60)+12(x-60) = 0
=> (x-60)(x+12)= 0
Therefore ,
x - 60 = 0 or x + 12 = 0
x = 60 or x = -12
x should not be negative.
x = 60
Number of books purchased by
shop keeper = x = 60
