When the boy strikes one end of the long pipe, the sound travels through air as well as through the pipe. The iron pipe is a solid. We know that sound travels faster through solids than through gases. Therefore, sound will travel faster through the iron pipe as compared to air. Hence, the boy at the other end of the pipe heard two sounds in a short interval of time, the first one was the sound that traveled through the pipe and the second one was the sound that traveled through the air.
