A BROWN COLOUR SOLID 'X' WHEN MIXED WITH ANOTHER SOLID 'Y'. DOESN'T REACT AT NORMAL TEMPERATURE. WHEN THIS MIXTURE IS IGNITED WITH BURNING Mg RIBBON, REACTION TAKES PLACE WHICH GIVES TWO PRODUCTS 'A' ,'B' .'A' IS A METAL AND SETTLE DOWN IN MOLTEN STATE AT THE BOTTOM WHILE 'B' IS A COMPOUND WHICH FLOATS OVER 'A' .THE REACTION IS EXOTHERMIC. WHAT ARE 'X' ,'Y','A' and 'B'. NAME The ABOVE REACTION.

X is Iron (III) oxide and Y is aluminium powder .
A mixture of Iron (III) oxide and aluminium powder is ignited with a burning Magnesium ribbon.
Aluminium reduces iron oxide to produce iron metal with evolution of lot of heat. Due to heat iron is produced in molten state.
Fe2O3 + 2Al -----> 2Fe + Al2O3+ heat.
The molten iron is poured between the broken iron pieces to weld them.This process is called Thermite Welding.
Thus, Metal A is Iron and compound B is Aluminium oxide.
