Answer:

The velocity of the bullet is equal to 450m/s when recoil velocity of pistol is 1.5m/s.

Explanation:

Consider that mass of the bullet is 'm' and mass of the pistol is 'M'.

Mass of the bullet,  m = 5g = 5×10⁻³Kg

Mass of the pistol, M = 1.5Kg

Initially both pistol and bullet were at rest, v₁ = 0 and u₁ = 0

The recoil velocity of the pistol, v₂ = 1.5m/s

The velocity with bullet moving after being fired is u₂,

From the law of conservation of momentum:

m.u₁ + M.v₁ = m.u₂ + M.v₂

(5×10⁻³Kg)(0) + (1.5Kg)(0) = (5×10⁻³Kg)(u₂) + (1.5Kg)(1.5m/s)

(5×10⁻³)(u₂) = - 2.25m/s

u₂ = - 450m/s

Therefore, the velocity of the bullet is equal to 450m/s. Negative sign shows that the velocity of bullet and recoil velocity of pistol are  in opposite direction from each other.
