Let journey be from A to B & distance between A to B is x km.

Going speed 50 km/ hr. Distance = x.

Time taken = x / 50 hr.

Returning back from B to A:

Distance = x km.

Speed = 40 km/ hr.

Time taken = x / 40 hr.

Average speed =

Total distance covered/ total time taken

= 2*x / (x/50 + x/40)

= 2 * 50 * 40 / 90

= 4000/90 = 44.44 km/ hr.

Answer: Average speed 44.44 km/ hr.
