a cell is connected across the resistance to form an electrical circuit. on adding 5 ohms to the resistance the current in the circuit is reduced to 5 /6 of its original value find the original resistance in the circuit

Let the original resistance be R

And, original current be i

Now, the new resistance = R'  = R + 5Ω

New current = i'  = i - i(5/6)  => 1/6 i

Assuming V to be constant,

V = i'R'  = (R + 5) i /6  = iR

=> (R + 5) i  = 6iR

=> R + 5 = 6R

=> 6R - R = 5

=> 5R = 5

=>   R = 1 Ω
