The compass needle is deflected due to a force is acting on it when we apply current

As flemings left hand thumb rule state

Answer:

The deflection is maximum when the conductor through A is perpendicular to the plane of the paper and the field due to it is maximum in the plane of the paper.

Explanation:

According to the Right hand thumb rule, the direction of the magnetic field is perpendicular to the direct of the current and if a magnetic compass is brought closer to the current carrying conductor, the deflection is maximum. But when the needle is placed near the point A on the plane as that of the paper as given in the figure, there is no deflection.
