A cottage industry produces a certain number of pottery articles in a day. It was observed on a particular day that the cost of production of each article (in rupees) was 5 more than twice the number of articles produced on that day. If the total cost of production on that day was Rs 168, find the number of articles produced and the cost of each article.

Step-by-step explanation:

 Let number of Articles produced in a day be x

 each article costs = 5+2x

 total cost (given) = Rs. 168

 x(5+2x)=168

 5x + 2x{}^2 = 168

 2x{}^2 +5x -168= 0

 2x{}^2 + 21x -16x -168 =0

 2x(x-8) + 21(x-8) =0

 (2x+21)(x-8)=0

 x=8,-10.5

since it cannot be negative.Thus x = 8

 number of articles produced= 8

 cost of each article = 5+ 2x

 = 5+2(8)

 = 5+16

 = Rs. 21
