Reasons for moving and backward while holding a catch:-

While holding a catch, the Impulse of force acting on the hand is equals to the product of force and time required to stop the ball. By moving the hand in backward direction, the cricketer increases the time of impact of the moving ball. As a result, the Impulse of Force decreases and therefore it does not his hurt hands hardly.
