(a)Define activity series of metals. Arrange the metals gold, copper, iron and magnesium in order of their increase in reactivity.
(b) What will you observe when:
(i) Some zinc pieces are put in copper sulphate solution.

Answer:

  • The reactivity series is a series of metals, in order of reactivity from highest to lowest metal. It is used to determine the products of single displacement reactions. According to the activity series, the order of the metals from top to bottom is magnesium, iron, copper and gold. Gold is the least reactive.

  • When zinc pieces are put into blue colour copper sulphate solution, Zinc displaces copper from copper sulphate solution. In this process, blue copper sulphate solution turns into colourless.

  • No reaction will occur. The silver pieces will simply sink down to the bottom of the vessel because silver is less reactive than iron and can't displace it from its salt
