our possible outcomes = 1,2,3,4,5,6 ,so no.of possible outcomes is 6. our favourable outcomes when a die is rolled are 2, 4,6 , so no.of favourable outcomes is 3.
probability = no.of favourable outcomes by
no.of possible outcomes
=> 3/6
=> 1/2
ans: 1/2

A die is rolled. Then the probability that an even number is obtained is 1/2

Given :

A die is rolled

To find :

The probability that an even number is obtained

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Find total number of possible outcomes

Here it is given that a die is rolled

So event points are { 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 }

Thus total number of possible outcomes = 6

Step 2 of 3 :

Find total number of possible outcomes for the event

Let A be the event that of getting an even number

Then event points for the event A are { 2 , 4 , 6 }

So total number possible outcomes = 3

Step 3 of 3 :

Find the probability

Hence the required probability

= P(A)

\displaystyle \sf{  =  \frac{Number \:  of  \: favourable \:  cases \:  to \:  the \:  event \:  A }{Total \:  number  \: of \:  possible \:  outcomes }}

\displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{3}{6}   }

\displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{1}{2}   }
