A+F=54A+F=54
A=54−FA=54−F

And 6 years earlier, their respective ages were A−6A−6 and F−6F−6.

F−6=6(A−6)F−6=6(A−6)

Substituting from above for A,

F−6=6(54−F−6)=6(48−F)=6∗48−6∗FF−6=6(54−F−6)=6(48−F)=6∗48−6∗F

F+6F=6∗48+6=6∗49F+6F=6∗48+6=6∗49

F=6∗497=42F=6∗497=42

A=54−F=54−42=12
